Short answer: ChatGPT Business is worth it when two or more people share work in ChatGPT and handle company information. You get shared projects, one bill, admin controls and "no training on your business data by default". It isn't worth it if people use ChatGPT only now and then, and you should buy seats only for the people who use it regularly.
What do you get with ChatGPT Business?
What OpenAI's pricing page listed for Business on 1 November 2026:
- "All ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex features", on desktop, web and mobile.
- Connections to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and more.
- A "secure workspace with SAML, SSO, and MFA", plus centralized billing and administration.
- Usage analytics and spend controls.
- "No training on your business data by default."
- Standard and Premium seats you can mix ("Premium" adds more usage, with "no 5-hour limit").
The page also says "Business plans are available starting at 2 users" and describes the plan as "for teams of 2–200 employees". A note on the same card: "Starting in December, plan usage will have a shared limit across all of ChatGPT and Codex." Expect the limits to change, and check them when you buy.
Business or several Plus accounts: when is it worth it?
The most common mess isn't an empty Business workspace. It's what one founder found during a software-spend audit: four separate ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, each person signing up on their own. Nobody could see anyone else's work, company information was spread across personal accounts, and there was no one place to manage any of it.
Business is worth it if most of these are true:
- Two or more people use ChatGPT most working days.
- They work from the same material (offers, price lists, past proposals, customer answers) and should share it as projects.
- Company or client information goes into the chats.
- You want one bill and the ability to add or remove people.
It's probably not worth it if people open ChatGPT once or twice a week, or if only one person really uses it. In that case, keep one individual plan.
Don't buy it for "more messages". Forum users report that the allowance on a Standard Business seat can feel similar to Plus, and one Business user was considering going back to Plus for that reason. The value is in sharing and data handling. If one person needs much more usage, that's what a Premium seat is for.
What does it cost for 2, 5, 10 or 20 people?
OpenAI's help centre lists Standard seats at $25 per user per month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually, after a $5 price cut on 2 April 2026, and Premium seats at $125 monthly or $100 annually. Prices vary by country and currency (the pricing page showed us local currency), so confirm the figure for your region before buying.
| Standard seats | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) | Per year, annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $50 | $40 | $480 |
| 5 | $125 | $100 | $1,200 |
| 10 | $250 | $200 | $2,400 |
| 20 | $500 | $400 | $4,800 |
For comparison, Claude's Team plan is also $20 per seat on annual billing and $25 monthly, for 2 to 150 people. How Claude's plans compare for small teams.
What happens to your company's data?
This is the clearest difference between the plans. On OpenAI's comparison table, the row "Content is used to train our models" reads "No" for Business, while individual plans show "Opt-out available". In other words, on Plus each person has to remember to switch training off; on Business it's off by default for everyone.
What Business doesn't decide for you: what your team may paste in. Before rolling it out, write a short rule set (half a page is enough): which client information is fine, what never goes in (passwords, payment details, personal data you don't need), and who checks anything that goes to a customer.
How to set it up in an afternoon
- Buy seats only for regular users. Start everyone on Standard. Unused seats aren't refunded mid-cycle, according to user reports, so don't over-buy.
- Name two owners. If one person leaves, the workspace isn't stranded.
- Turn on single sign-on if you use Google or Microsoft accounts, and test it with one person first.
- Invite the team and move everyone off their personal Plus accounts.
- Build three shared projects for the work you repeat most. For a small B2B team, we'd start with these Illustrative:
- Sales: your offers, prices, ideal customer notes and three good past emails, with instructions to research a company and draft a first message.
- Proposals: two past proposals, your pricing rules and terms, with instructions to draft a first version for a person to finish.
- Customer answers: your FAQ, product notes and tone guide, with instructions to draft replies for a person to approve.
- Share the half-page data rules and set a spend alert.
- Review after 30 days: who uses it, which projects get used, and whether anyone needs a Premium seat.
The limits people run into
- Usage windows. Some limits reset every 5 hours on Standard seats; Premium removes the 5-hour limit, per the pricing page.
- Shared limit from December 2026. OpenAI says plan usage will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex. Teams that use Codex heavily should watch this.
- Seat count isn't usage. One forum reply to someone comparing 20 Business seats with one individual Pro plan: the seats cost more for about the same total usage on some features. Buy seats for people, not for capacity.
Common questions
Is ChatGPT Business the same as ChatGPT Team?
Business is the current name of OpenAI's plan for small and mid-size teams. Many older articles and videos still call it Team, often with out-of-date prices.
Can we mix Standard and Premium seats?
Yes. OpenAI's pricing page lists "mix and match seat types", so you can give heavier users Premium seats without upgrading everyone.
What's the minimum number of seats?
Two. OpenAI's pricing page says Business plans are available starting at 2 users.
Does OpenAI train on our Business chats?
Not by default. OpenAI's pricing page says there is no training on your business data by default for Business, while individual plans offer an opt-out.
ChatGPT Business or Claude Team?
They cost about the same per seat. The better choice depends on the work your team does most and which tools you already use; we compared the main assistants on the same tasks in a separate guide.
